VividQ Celebrates the UNESCO International Day of Light
Throughout history, the technology and science of light have played an essential role in the development and evolution of societies. Today, global initiatives are underway to emphasise the importance of research and investment in light-based technologies for the future development of the global society.
The UNESCO International Day of Light is a worldwide initiative that provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education and sustainable development. This expands to fields as diverse as medicine, communications and energy.
Held on May 16th every year, the date marks the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1860 by physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman. As a light-based technology, Computer-Generated Holography would not exist without our understanding and research into the principles of photonics, or the science of light.
To celebrate the day, VividQ launched a company-wide photography competition based on the theme of ‘light’. To enter the contest, our team photographed and submitted an image that appropriately represented light to them. Judged by Faye Holland, Founder at Cambridge-based communications agency, cofinitive, the winning entry was awarded by having their photograph printed, frame and displayed in VividQ’s new Cambridge office space.
Our winning entry was submitted by Camille Deer, IP Analyst at VividQ.
"Light makes you notice the ordinary, just another cloudy evening, and find it breathtaking".
Camille Deer, Competition Winner
On judging the winning photo, Faye Holland shared: “When light does break through, in whatever form, it can change everything - vision, temperature, attitude. Sometimes you need to hang on in there and wait, whether that is discovering something new, creating something or just wanting for the clouds to pass. This photo is not the winner because it’s the best picture, it’s a winner because it captures a sense of opportunity.”Below are a selection of runner up images taken by VividQ staff.
